Fallon Sherrock
A hairdresser from Milton Keynes who became the first woman to win a match at the darts world championship
Fallon Sherrock grew up in Milton Keynes, the daughter of a darts-playing family, and trained as a hairdresser. She played on the women's circuit, which offered small prize money and almost no attention, and reached the women's world final of the rival BDO in 2015. Her son was born with a kidney condition and she was caring for him largely alone. A medical problem of her own caused her face to swell, and she was mocked online for the way she looked.
In December 2019 she qualified for the main PDC World Championship at Alexandra Palace, where a handful of women had played and all had lost. In her first match she beat Ted Evetts by three sets to two, the first woman ever to win a match at the tournament. The crowd sang her name. Four days later she beat Mensur Suljović, one of the top players in the world, and the story went round the world. She was called the Queen of the Palace.
She has never claimed to be the best player in the world, and the men's game has not always been welcoming. In 2021 she became the first woman to reach the final of a televised PDC major, the Grand Slam of Darts, and in 2022 she won the first Women's World Matchplay.
She is still playing, and still doing the odd haircut.
